In the state of Maryland, direct access allows PTs to see you without a referral from a doctor. You just need a doctor who is active in your care and will sign our plan of care.
Many people are familiar with the role of a physical therapist in treating loss of mobility, weakness, pain and balance deficiencies. There is a large carryover between the role of a PT and the role of an OT. Despite the name, an occupational therapist does not treat limitations related to one’s occupation. Instead, the word “occupation” refers to daily life tasks such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. While each discipline takes a slightly different approach, PTs and OTs work together on the common goal which is to promote safety and independence with activities of daily living.
